Life Beyond
The aim of the Life Beyond project is to raise awareness of the cultural and historical value of burial grounds.
Project partners from: UK, Malta, Turkey, Portugal, Italy
Cemeteries and other burial grounds, and their artefacts are the material anchors to our past to create lasting identities. The project partners identified and raised awareness of these cultural heritage sites in their regions.
By caring for their cultural heritage, communities overcome differences and strengthen social cohesion. Culture is a synonym for diversity and can help to support acceptance of our own culture and to embrace other cultures.
We have the responsibility to provide adequate legal frameworks to protect the cultural heritage of grave yards and burial grounds, including the protection of the artefacts found at these sites.
Study Visits
The project partners arranged a number of study visits to exchange knowledge on how to promote understanding in a diverse society, the cultural aspects, historical value and mystical attributes of burial grounds. Cemeteries and other burial sites, especially the artifacts found therein, point to the past and evoke history. They are the material anchors of all of our narratives about the past. Thus, cemeteries and burial sites aid us in the creation of lasting identities (identification of the different cultural heritage which also identify the similarities between the different cultures, further assisting in eliminating the barriers of cultures which still exist today).
Participants from Northern Ireland, Ukraine, Turkey, Italy and Portugal visited important cultural and burial sites in Malta and shared examples from their own regions during two visits:

24-29 October 2022 in Malta
Participants took part in a return visit in November 2022 to Ireland.
