Cormac O Holland- Seanchaí (Storyteller and Musician from Ballyscally)

Featured on Facebook “Indigenous story of America” “N Ireland Historical Photographical society” and Taken from Rose Shaws Book “Carltons Country” originally published in 1930 and Republished in 1931. (Spelt Cormic- spelt as it was said in the book). 

Year taken unknown. 

(Cormac aged 77yrs in 1911 census head of household and widowers- cannot read- Possibly 71 not 77see below) However, a marriage certificate of Cormic Holland (labourer)on 9th January 1874 aged 34 (suggests he is 71 in 1911)of Ballyscally upper and son of Cormic Holland and Catherine(nee McCarron)married Mary Shevlin from Ballymacann (daughter of Terry Shevlin and Ann (nee McKenna) in St Macartans the Forth. (Known locally as Packie Edward- sister of those in Photo 2 & 3) with his sons who lived in Corleaghan just off “the horse shoe road” and close by where his sister (Cassie Keown McKenna -Nee McElroy; lived a few fields away). No date for the photo.

BELIEVED TO BE Mary Ann McElroy

(Wife of Packie Edward above- nee McCaffrey and died in 1953) with twin children looking out the half door.

The reeds/canes to the side were used to keep the draft of the cold out at night time.

Another taken from Rose Shaws book “Carltons County”. Francis (aged 17 in 1911 census)and minnie (Mary Ellen aged 11 in 1911 census) McGovern (Ref Josephine Treanor (nee McGovern) . Lived in corleaghan along locally known horse shoe road. Josephine Treanor(Nee McGovern) has a signed copy of book “Carltons Country”signed by Rose Shaw. No date of PHOTO KNOWN

Believed to be Margaret McCaughey

(aged 72 in 1911 census). Margaret occupation is quoted as a spinner, who lived opposite the Forth Chapel ballinagurragh, springtown Augher.  Margaret would have been the sexton of the Forth Chapel and looked after an orphan boy Patrick (aged 13 in 1911 census). On the right hand side of the fireplace is believed to be the key to the Forth Chapel (Ref PAnton/ MMcG/Kmc)

BELIEVED TO BE Mary Shevlin

who married and lived “In Corrakibbert” as noted in Rose Shaws Book “Carlton Country”.
Mary (nee Corrigan from Glenoo ,cooneen)believed to have married Terrence(Torrie) Shevlin. See possible connection to Photo 1.

This picture is included in Rose Shaws book again and noted as “In Corrakibbert”.

It is believed to be taken over looking the house in the picture above situated near the mass rock in Corrakibberet accessible from Ballyscally.

Mary Shevlin is believed to be Grandmother of Packie Shevlin Shanco and Marie Robinson Crossowen. Indeed Marie Robinson is believed to have been a carer for a relation of Mary in in former home Glenoo Coneen. (MR02102024). A recently discovered photo has the dog with a different pose.

BELIEVED TO BE Mary and Ellen McCaughey (Nickname Pagin). Often shared on facebook by “Northern Ireland Historical Photographical society” from early 1900’s. In 1911 census both are registered as farmeress and not married aged 30 and 28.

Picture in Rose Shaws book “Carltons Country” noted as “winning the oats” note the footless stockings, bare feet worn by Irish in early times.

BELIEVED TO BE Mary and Ellen McCaughey (pagin McCaughey) who lived beyond current Paul Short homestead and Locally known as James Peters lane which leads to Ann Holland the gamekeepeers where a story is told in Rose Shaws book “Carlton Country”. This continues to what is known as the 3 county hollow where Co Fermanagh, Co Monaghan and Co Tyrone meet near “Shane Bernaghs Stable” a highway man also mentions in Roses stories.

BELIEVED TO BE A picture of men at work in the fields looking towards the Tower Hill “Brakenridge Folly”. It is believed to be near the homestead of Bogues near Corrakibbert. Top Left to Right standing; unknown, Mick Bogue, Frank Bogue(Owney Bogue uncle). On The ground Left to Right, Owney Bogue, Unknown (possibly Ned Bogue brother of young Hugh Bogue aged 16 in 1911), Bearded Man XXX McConnell, Hugh Bogue(aged 17 in 1911 census) , Unknown. As below this photo features on front cover of Ulster historical foundation “Farming ancestors in Ireland” (Ref LB 12082024)

Unknown or cannot confirm identities or where photo has been taken. Possibly another Bogue family?

Possibly Ellen and Mary McCaughey (Pagin) in the bog cutting turf with a turf spade.

BELIEVED TO BE Paddy and Kate Holland (Daughter of Cormic O Holland see Photo 1) in their home in ballyscally in front of the turf fire. It is most likely to be their son Johnny or Joe (Joe remained in the family home, where Johhny in later years moved @ 1 mile owned it is believed by McAnenlys (Current residence of Sean Holland and family 2024).

with her husband Paddy in the background with a stock of most likely corn on his back. At the bottom of the stock are sons Johhny (born 18 December 1901) and Joe (18 May 1906). Same dog is in photo 19. This picture is featured in Rose Shaw book “Carltons Country” annotated – “Among the stooks, Ballyscally” (Ref; PH06052024)

Kate Holland on the road near her home in Ballyscally (taken in the direction of Brackenridges folly but slightly out of sight to the right) . Just behind her is likely to be her oldest son Johnny born 18 December 1901 . It is believed the photo was taken about year 1908 when johnny aged @ 7years.

BELIEVED TO BE Kate Holland 

Although this is named incorrectly as Patrick and Mary Ann Mcelroy in some internet searches, It is believed to be Paddy Holland (Formerly culamore) and his wife Kate Holland (Nee O Holland daughter of Cormac O Holland upper Ballyscally) in their home currently occupied by grandson Pat holland and great grandson Malachy Holland. Both Paddy and Kate (Catherine) are aged 35 on the 1911 census. This picture is featured in Rose Shaw book “Carltons Country” annotated “A story about the good people” (REF: PH 06052024)

from Knockmany. Sons were Felix and Packie Donnelly. Associated to the Nickname Mason Donnelly as he was possibly a stone Mason. Believed to have been taken at homestead at Cargagh Near Augher. (PR31012025)

Patrick McCaughey (Paddy Pagin) and his wife Catherine (Cassie). Catherine (Possibly nee McCarron from Lisbane old Monaghan rd Joe Kelly may now own the farm). It is believed the picture planting among the Potatoe ridges. In the background is believed to be a homestead of McCarron near Bogues Corrakibbert(Needs confirmed). It has been dated in a Jack Johnston book that photo was taken the year they were married in 1906.

Believed to be Paddy McCaughey (pagin) as in picture 27. However, no of the other persons so far have been named.

Poossibly one of the most instantly recognised and most used of Rose Shaws photos. This is believed to be a photo of Catherine (Cassie) McCaughey (nee McCarron) at here home near Corrakibberet. Seen here holding a creel of turf. Again as is common in Rose Shaw photos the lady is in bare feet

This is taken at the same house as above and below (McCaughey – Pagins) near Corrakibbert. However, it is taken from the road in the direction of the house behind the lady. The lady is carrying a basket.
